A school counseling program consistent with my humanistic values is concerned with the holistic development of all students. This means striving to empower students to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. In this holistic approach, school counseling programs ought to mirror and exude the beliefs and values proudly championed by the American School Counseling Association (ASCA). Apart from wanting to see school counseling programs reflect what our professional organization has deemed as "best practice," it is my personal belief that truly effective school counseling sees academic and SEL priorities as interconnected concerns. Achieving the ambitions of serving each and every student's needs requires flexibility and understanding of how complex and potentially non-academic in nature, said needs may be.
